Leveraging Digital Tools for Holistic Collaboration

This paper deep-dives into how customised solutions can bridge the design collaboration process between architects and engineers. These tools, built upon off-the-shelf solutions to improve internal efficiency, provide new means for design communication and allow for more collaborative design solutions. As a result, the design team benefits through accelerated design studies and a lowering of communication hurdles. Downstream, developers benefit from cost-savings that result from an integrated design approach and custom structural optimisation strategies.

Leveraging Architectural Geometry

The video demonstrates how structural engineers can leverage conceptual architectural surface geometry to compute basic demands on the structural system. With custom Rhino-Grasshopper components, our team can establish the wind pressures for a given building code and derive wind loads on the tower. Additional custom components allow for direct translation of Rhino-Grasshopper geometry to structural analysis without loss of information.

Structural Morphology

It has always been challenging for structural engineers to study the effect of changes in geometry on structural performance. This is inherent due to the different purposes of commercially available design software (geometry versus analysis). We have written custom programs to facilitate such studies. In this video, we explore the effect of changing the core depth on the natural periods of the building.
